TalentTrainers' Coaching Tip:

Running out of air?

You’re in a live shot and suddenly you feel like, “Yikes, I have no air left!” If you’ve ever experienced this, it can be terrifying. Couple solutions. First, you’re probably going too fast on-air and not allowing yourself a chance to breathe. So, even before you begin do several slow, deep diaphragmatic breaths. Close your eyes and take in those breaths deep from the diaphragm. Then, once on-air take at least one or two slow breaths in the segment. A great place to do that is when looking down at some notes or copy. Also, tell yourself inside to simply “slow down.” Even write those words down on your notes or desk copy. Finally, you’re not alone in feeling this way. It’s a natural tendency to just keep rambling on in live situations. Remember, if you start to lose your breath while in a segment, quickly remind yourself to slow down. Take that deep breath and continue. It will instantly give you control over pacing.
